Spring Clean with Purpose

Once the weather warms up, you’re probably pulling back the curtains, letting in the light, and–oh no! The beautiful natural light is, unfortunately, highlighting a few spots you’ve neglected to clean over the winter. No problem! Spring cleaning is an annual ritual that many people use to start over fresh. At Williamsburg North, our apartments near Keystone have some great tools already in place, like convenient washer/dryer hookups and an on-site laundry facility. Read on to get some tips on making your spring cleaning simple and effective!

Make Chore Categories

If you start your spring cleaning by looking around at everything, you’ll likely give up before you ever get started. Instead, take control of your cleaning by making some lists. There are a few different approaches you can take.

One list you may want to make is a set of categories for the kinds of cleaning you’ll have to do. For example, you’ll probably want to clear out your storage spaces, like cabinets and closets. That’s one category. Another could be linens, so you’ll grab your window treatments, comforters, throw blankets, etc. and give them a nice wash, dry, and/or fluff. This will also keep you from getting out a cleaning product or trash can over and over again because you keep switching chore categories. Other lists you can try are cleaning room by room or cleaning product by product. Whatever your approach, lists help!

Use Every Cleaning Hack

There are no bonus points in spring cleaning for using the most time-consuming method to clean up. Don’t be afraid to hop on sites like Pinterest to grab a few ideas to make your cleaning fast and convenient. Search for things like “cleaning hacks” or “cleaning tricks.”

Here are a few of our favorite hacks. Does your sink kind of stink? Grab a lemon, cut it into wedges, and put them down your garbage disposal. Of course, don’t overload it, and always run water while your run your garbage disposal. In just a few minutes, you’ll have a fresh-smelling sink. Do you have some pesky burn stains on your stovetop from those nights when the noodles boiled over? Grab a dryer sheet, wet it, let it sit on the stains for at least 15 minutes, then rub away the grime. Finally, have you struggled to find a window cleaner that doesn’t leave streaks? Just take 2 cups of water, 2 teaspoons of liquid soap, and ¼ cup of white vinegar, give it a mix, and then spray it on the window. Then it gets fun! Grab some newspaper and use it to scrub. Voila! Clean windows!

Take It Slow

Remember when you made those lists? There’s no need to tackle them all at once! Set some reasonable goals for yourself, and then follow through. A lot of your spring cleaning chores are things you need to do only once in a while, so letting them wait a tad longer won’t do any harm.

One way to set goals is by using something you already have on your phone, in your kitchen, or on your microwave: a timer. There’s no need to spend an entire weekend or even an entire day endlessly cleaning. Instead, pick a few intervals of time that are reasonable, and apply them to your categories or rooms. For example, maybe you have a spare 15 minutes after work most days of the week. The odds are you can make it through one shelf in your closet or cabinet in 15 minutes. When you have 30 minutes, maybe you do something a little more detailed, like go around collecting all of your linens. Then they can go in the wash while you sit down and relax the rest of the evening.
